Route 2: New Orleans, LA
April 1st, 2009
New Orleans is a great town! Our event was held at the Southern Animal Foundation (SAF), a small but active and highly effective no-kill shelter and veterinary service. Like the city of New Orleans, the event was spirited and fun. Along with the SAF’s precious pets, rescue organization, My Heart’s Desire out of Terrebonne Parish, and the Jefferson Parish West Bank Shelter brought such adorable and sweet dogs, puppies, cats and kittens for everyone to adopt. A lot of snuggling, hugging and kissing was taking place and miles of smiles were the order of the day.
Local dog training service, Canine Refine brought their own dog, Nomi, who enthusiastically displayed many training basics; sit, stay, heel, etc. along with some more complicated commands such as: get the leash, find the keys, and, at the pointing of a forefinger, rolling over and playing dead – all fours in the air. Nomi was not just cute and charming but smart as well and the crowds were impressed.
The staff, volunteers and people of New Orleans made our event so successful and such a pleasure to attend. Naturally, the real stars were the special animals for whom our work is done – done with determination, gusto and lots of love. The animals loving glances and tender kisses are just some of the incentives to being sure we work as hard and as long as we must to find them their permanent homes. So it is on to Birmingham, AL to continue the quest.
